Thanks for that Tb. And I don't know what Col's been up to but I just 'liked' it on here and it's appeared on my Facebook timeline. Damn clever technology or what? I'm catching up. Very s-l-o-w-l-y.....

I was never a big fan of the breadth of Peel's taste, but he certainly opened a lot of minds up to the diversity of music beyond the record companies stranglehold on 'playlists.'

Nicely put Ian. I listened to Peely for years, and have to say , I also didn't subscribe to the " if John Peel played it , it must be good" mantra. Having said that, most of the time it was good. I feel lucky to have grown up with john Peel providing a gateway to some great sounds. Those are some big shoes to fill. It ain't gonna happen.

Amazing site. Satisfying to stroke the shelves and watch the LP's slide out (http://thespace.org/content/s000004u/albums/index.html?shelfNum=3).
Even more satisfying to riffle the sleeves and see what's on each shelf (http://thespace.org/content/s000004u/albums/recordbox.html?letter=V).

Thanks.

When my daughter was going to be born we rushed to the hospital. Previously I had made some cds with smooth music to play there while the delivery was going on. The only problem is that the cd player didn't work, only the radio. The music there was crap until John Peel came about, but that day he had one of those shows you don't like even a third of the music played. My partner was in agony and John was playing grime, trash, doom core, etc. My partner just made me shut the radio half way a "song" that reminded me of a car crash in slow motion. Good old John.

I've got two longstanding John Peel mysteries:

The first Dead Kennedies session featured a version of Holiday in Cambodia done in a slow menacing tempo. I taped it, played it to death and was furious when the single and album came out with much-speeded up versions. I've never been able to locate this version since.

in the early 2000s I tuned in one night when he used to do sessions from his house - all a bit too cosy in general, I reckoned, but on this night he had a brillant band on - I think in his house or live from some festival. They were playing angular punky guitar rock but in a free jazz style. Seemed improvised but was actually totally disciplined. No choruses, no tunes even, just jagged riffing that kept changing and never repeating. It knocked my socks off, but I've completely forgotten who they were.

This one? The sound is terrible by the way... I didn't know the Dead Kennedys had a session with John Peel. I would love to have that taped :D

seems I'm just dreaming it, according to the list of sessions here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/sessions/1970s/1979/)

I definitely taped that slow version, though. Could be the demo, but I remember it as even slower.

Thr list also shows that Cymande never did a session for him, which excited me when his missus mentioned it in the (auto)biography

When their 2nd mini lp was released, In God We Trust, Inc I loved the lounge jazz remake of California Über Alles.

He probably played it at the wrong speed!
