I was going to just tag this on to the One Mile An Hour thread but could this hang as a place to stick all new / old folk recommendations?
Just read this about Jessica Pratt (http://www.normanrecords.com/records/137648-jessica-pratt--jessica-pratt) on the Normans Records website and Picadilly are promoting her LP heavily as well.
Phil says people are talking about this record as far and wide as Pitchfork, so surely this Pratt lassie ain’t fooling around, and it’s easy to see why people are so charmed, with her smooth vocals and easygoing fingerpicking style making for an engaging and immediately palatable listen.
The immediate name that springs to mind, and keeps coming back throughout the record, is Joni Mitchell; there’s more than a touch of her breathy warble on these grooves and the recording has a very ‘60s feel to it as well. There’s echoes of Joanna Newsom or maybe Julie Doiron or Sharon van Etten but also the dusky, spacious feel I get from people like Songs: Ohia and even Jose Gonzalez - her feather-light picking style certainly brings to mind the latter’s graceful shapes anyway.
It’s all so fragile that it’d be fair to mention the likes of Vashti Bunyan and Stina Nordenstam too, but basically we seem to have a new, unique and thoroughly enchanting voice piping up among the dreamy, hushed singer-songwritery types.
Good to see that she's out on vinyl first with CDs following after Christmas.
