Went to Backstreet Norwich Soul Club last night.

Do you know those times when you hear a tune and it really just gets you straight away? Happens to me about once every six months and it happened last night when the DJ dropped this at the start of the night.

I think it's the simplicity of it; and the soft horns counterpointing the melody; and the way it just kind of stops...then starts again...
Late Motown edging to Philly sound? It was apparently her last single for Motown.

Oh man.....I'm just fillin' up to this today.

Fantastic! (And I aint even sad or nothing!)

Martha Reeves: No One There

And later, when the dancing was getting going the DJ dropped this mega old fave of mine.

Eddie Holman: I Surrender

Oh man that's so good.

Moral of The Story
Feeling rough, achy and under the weather for a few days but had been looking forward to the night.
Said 'Sod It!', made myself drug up and made the effort to go so...
God / Allah or whoever gave me a tune for life as a reward.
If I'd stayed in I'd have missed it.
Result!

So I'm writing this down for future reference; 1 shot of night nurse to 2 pints of beer........excellent. The Eddie Holman tune is great, new one to me. I like that high pitched vocal at the beginning, put me in mind of the great Ted Taylor. I shall be taking this to Oz with me

Sounds like you had a great night

Love Ted Taylor but that's a new one on me.

Naturally as as a part-time halfwit I came to Ted far too late to pick up a cheap copy of Somebodys Always Trying. :(. I think it's a regular £80+ these days.

Excepting the Northern Soul tunes I heard that were in the charts when I was a kid (Skiing In the Snow / There's A Ghost In My House) that Eddie Holman was the first proper NS tune I heard as a teenager that I really loved.

I'm still completely baffled as to why everyone rates that Frank Wilson tune so highly. I Surrender blows it away I think.

Martha Reeves is UK only on 45 but is easy to find on the album black magic , great record and not an easy one to turn up.

Unsurprising for such an anthemic tune. I had a little root around as soon as I got home last night and was glum to see it's Popsikable....:( Ah well. One day.

That Kingsize Taylor version is RAW! Doesn't float my boat in quite the same way but I suspect in the heat of a more garagey sounding set it would be fire. My favourite bit of the Ted version is that continuous high note that kicks in over the chorus and just hangs there.

PS: If you know of any other Soul / Northern Soul with a similar vibe to that Martha track feel free to post some up!

Yeah I think i prefer the Ted version too but that sits nicer in a UK beat section.

As for other tunes try this but save yourself a painful popsike its dog rare.....

Ahhhh love that Jimmy Bo! First heard that on one of the 'World of Binky Spoons' Popcorn / Soul / Northern Soul downloads before Binky disappeared.....
Binky gifted me Vi Velasco too and it's never been on 45.
Spoke should get on it!
(Whatever happened to those guys?)

Eunice Collins - at the motel is the one Spoke need to get onto I'd say there's a demand for that one!

Stones Throw have it covered if memory serves me correctly? There was talk about it on Waxidermy a few months back. If they do it properly on 45 it'll fly out but I'm sure someone said they were thinking of putting it on a comp? Bit bizarre that!
