Compilation lps come in all flavours; by label, by artist, by genre etc etc. After a full and exhausting 5 minutes Internet research Wikipedia gives some good early examples but I'm sure there must be earlier ones.

Label compilation: Motown Chartbusters
Genre (rock): The Rock Machine Turns You On

Interested in any ideas. There must have been much earlier Jazz / Trad / Folk ones surely?

Brilliant thanks... I knew there'd be some much earlier ones in jazz and I'll wager there are much earlier lounge, swing and maybe even Exotica ones too.

I'd quite like to nail down the earliest comps for every genre. I'm probably going to need the assembled armies of Waxidermy, Soul Source, DJ History and VG+ for this...

Interesting... (http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/mr-music/Ask-Mr-Music-123.html)

Ace art work on those.

I'll lay a bet there are some superb Ben Shahn-style covers on comps from 50s America.

I guess comps were issued as soon as 10" and 12" lps came out.
78 labels often issued bound 'albums' of various works by the same artist. Don't know if there were any 78 label comps or various artists albums, though.

Earliest vinyl comps with various artists i can think of is the Barclay Surprise Party series. Here's a 10" from 1955 (http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=551360)
No idea if these are among the first, but Eddie Barclay was a smart operator and one of the original zazous who invented the discotheque. and if you've got a disco, it makes sense to put lots of hits on one record.

anyway, here's shellac vulture Irene Dunne scouring her album before getting down to some light orchestral/crooner action on the Victrola. Great movie

I would like to know when the first comp featuring the word 'disco' appeared. I'd hazard a guess at late 60s France but just found these Yahoo replies (http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060609065022AAVWTMe).
