Just leafing through the History Is Made At Night blog and re-reading the clubbing in Brixton 87 (http://history-is-made-at-night.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/1987.html)article my mind jumped to the musical content of those free NME cassettes from the 80s.

They covered an awful lot of musical ground and were discussed at length in a couple of VG+ threads (http://www.verygoodplus.co.uk/showthread.php?29627-NMEmories-light-the-corners-of-my-tape-deck)
Good news for anyone reminiscing and wanting them for CD or Ipod; they're all available for download now.
