An NME blog has suggested the 10 Mightiest Basslines in music. (http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=1&title=10_greatest_basslines&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)

Ignore Psycho Killer, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Blue Monday et all. What's the danciest, sinuous-est, grooviest, psych-iest, Latinesque-iest, Ska-iest, Disco-iest... etc.

Easiest is simple.

Haven't heard this for yeeeeeeears. This was massive amongst the top year kids (used to be called Fifth Year) when I first started teaching. Some of them used to bring cardboard boxes to the Main Hall at lunchtime to practice their breakdancing.

The Wire magazine for July has an article entitled Low End Theories which includes a playlist of what they consider to be the best bass tracks. 75 in the Playlist and 68 of them are on Youtube.

All 68 are collected here on one YouTube Playlist. (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5E85D012CAD9FBA1&feature=plcp)

And Good Times is nowhere in sight.:D

Timely! Cheers for the heads-up AP.

Listening to the 10 NME ones was easy, listening to 68 obscure ones is a bit of a trawl.

One-A-Day it is then........:)

The late, great Jaco Pastorius plays some wonderfully subtle bass on this alternating it between lead and backing.

Classic Rare Groove 12 from Mr Lonnie Liston Smith, don't listen to this stuff much any more but this one still gets me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dmX2uhQrZs

And in a similar vein Wiggle Waggle by Herbie Hancock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHnSh3amu8o

And in a different vein together by Ray Barretto, the bass I think is done on the piano, but is still a bass line hook for me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ze4xTXI-xU

And a different one again Teenage Chase by Keith Mansfield, I love the bubbly bass sound that Herbie Flowers gets and this one pushes it to maximum effect

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi1A-k9m6Fw

A bit similar I guess is Ken Woodman's Mexican Flyer

here are two that i have always enjoyed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVYwZ1hgNiU

Bootsy Collins - munchies for your love. Apart from the tittle being part of my childhood nickname, i love the subtle wah bass on this, It sort of builds and gets more funky as it goes on.. i just like that wuuuuuuuuw bop bi bop sound...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSdglxtW8Lg

Donny Hathaway - Everything Is Everything. The bass on this entire LP is great but this is the track where the bass player, willie weeks, really gets down. If you havent got the time to listen to the whole track, just skip to about 8mins 25. Did Willie Weeks ever do anything else?

Willie Weeks was a popular session man for just about everyone in the 70s but his work with Donny Hathaway and on this track in particular is considered his finest hour / three and a half minutes. Totally solid lp.

25 Best Basslines Ever (http://www.musicradar.com/news/bass/the-25-best-basslines-of-all-time-509265) according to Musicradar....

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. A massive 23 percent of you voted Hysteria from Muse's 2003 album Absolution into first place. Bassist Chris Wolstenholme certainly takes centre stage on this track with his intricate, processed bass riff driving the song along and providing a fat bedrock for Matt Bellamy's guitar histrionics. Congratulations Muse!
