I was fascinated by a tiny new robotic butterfly I saw today in a Science magazine. It's not on YouTube yet but half an hour of browsing around robots I found some other great stuff:

Big Dog is v. well-known but if you haven't seen it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNZPRsrwumQ

And Big Dog's more cautious little brother:

Really like this climbing one from the same firm:

And one you can buy for £300 and operate from your Ipad or Iphone. :D

OK, it's not a robot as such but 'How could you not get it?' as the chorus of the advert goes....

I think Little Dog is strangely more life-like than any of the others. I love those extreme terrain moves!

These are cool.

On a more mundane level, I am fascinated by developments in factory robots. Witness here (http://eine.tumblr.com/post/616072290/pneumatic-robot-picked-a-peck-of-pre-cut-peppers) and here (http://eine.tumblr.com/post/22806059358/the-secret-life-of-dead-chickens-say-goodbye-to)...

There's nothing mundane about that! I used to love that advert that showed the cars being spray painted on a production line. I knew a man whose job was to design and build the automated machinery for making and wrapping confectionery like Mars Bars. He was extraordinarily well-paid and I regret now never asking him about how he felt working solely on projects that would reduce the need for manual labour. The march of progress though.

What's that famous quote again? Machines and machines that make machines are capable of ....something or other. Damn my memory is awful these days!

Excellent stuff Eine. I think you may be the man to appreciate this video. Not a robot obviously, but there's something weirdly compelling about it.
I watch this when i'm stressed and it calms me down.:o

Wow, that video is awesome. I was very curious about the person behind that amazing job and I did a bit of research. Here is an interview with the maker (http://www.google.com/translate?hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=es&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fnoticias.lainformacion.com%2Fcienci a-y-tecnologia%2Fciencias-general%2Fel-jubilado-que-fabrica-los-motores-mas-pequenos-del-mundo-he-fabricado-diez-y-los-ingenieros-alucinan_fcqL0vlEmO20yopkTgo9X3%2F).

All that passion reminds me of my favourite film.

What a lovely old bloke! :) He's definitely nailed the way to handle retirement.... get on a mission!
Not sure what mine will be yet but I'm sure I could find something to get obssessed about.

I only know Indian bikes from American Pickers. Not heard of that film but if it's passion / obssession-based it'll be right up my street.

Titanboa is a lot larger than you think. You get an idea of the scale when Mondo Spider strolls in. That's two sentences I never predicted writing today.

I need a Mondo Spider to pick my daughter up from school so I can out-herod the other parents with their 4x4s, people carriers, RVs, articulated lorries and road trains ;)

I was searching for information on jellyfish earlier when I accidentally found this video and remembered this thread. How sad is that for a Friday night? I wasn't looking for Sexy Robots either before anyone starts.

Good find though. That jellyfish balloon thing in the second half is awesome and the first ones are actually very sexy.
Definitely added to my Xmas list for bathtime fun, beats Action man in a diving suit any day of the week.

I've just had a Google around and it appears that Palitoy never made an Action Man Crate Digger.:(

Col's got a boy child around the right age to really, really want one (complete with accessories) and that also handily justifies the creation of one.

If anyone has an Action Man with a beard going spare please pm me.

Thanks.

Not robot related, sorry, just thinking out loud from the post above.

This is doing the rounds on Facebook. If I saw it in real life I'd set fire to it without pausing.

That would scare the crap outta me too but I wonder if it would have been creepier if the baby rose up out of the pram slightly slower?
