The whole band would like to thank Col Wolfe for posing the question that led to him composing and posting the Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) story on Forumusic (http://www.forumusic.co.uk/heatwave.html).

It was the catalyst that put all 5 of us back in touch after 40 years and brought back many memories ... deja vu all over again!

★ Saturday 25th June 2016, Heatwave is playing a reunion gig in the Northampton area ~ venue to be announced. ★

Prior to that, none of us knew how much of our 'history' is 'out there' online ... and, we would love to hear from anyone who saw / heard the group ~ esp. if they have any fun / funny tales to tell.

★ John, ★ Richard, ★ Terry, ★ Martin, ★ Pete ...

Thanks for stopping by gents. :) Brilliant that Col's article brought you together again and it'll be interesting to see if, over time, anyone finds the article and gets in touch with you. Keep us posted!

(The article is a 'work in progress' and there'll be a few more soundclips and some slightly different pictures added at the weekend).

Cheers

Recorded in Pye Studios on 16th October 1970, the Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) single had Maggie Stredder, Gloria George and Marian Davis, known as The Ladybirds, as back-up singers on the A-side – and Doris Troy with Rick Wakeman playing keyboards on the B-side.

Penny Farthing Records PEN 738 was issued 2nd November 1970 in the U.K. (http://www.45cat.com/record/pen738) in a plain but bright orange sleeve (http://www.discogs.com/Heatwave-4-Sister-Simon-Funny-Man-Rastus-Ravel-Is-A-Mean-Old-Man/release/1520814)... 40 years later, the band learned, it was also released in Germany (http://www.45cat.com/record/6067015) and Japan (http://www.45cat.com/record/y8p) – with a picture sleeve.

Newtracks, a game studio in Berlin, Germany released a game called 'Bands (http://www.newtracks.biz/#!/games)' ~ playable on F'book and mobile devices.
The game combines casual gaming with music featuring popular music from licensed artistes worldwide and also has an official Bands Chart ~ the more a song is played, the higher it rises in the charts.

2 songs were submitted ~ in the hope of soaring up the score charts ... both were accepted and implemented ~ 1 of which is : 'Rastus Ravel (Is A Mean Old Man)' ... the B-side of the 1970 single by Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu).

Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) members: Peter Allat [vocals], Terry Shea , Richard Steen [guitar] plus James 'Stumpy' Allen [drums] became The Sensation and their single, 'Black Eyed Woman' b/w 'Baby', was released on the Sticky (http://www.45cat.com/artist/the-sensation) label.

The single was also issued, with a picture sleeve, in France on Sirocco (48002), Germany on Polydor and Holland on Barclay (67.022).
'Baby' (Edward), the B-side, is track 18 on the 12 July 2005 RPM label compilation album, Boobs: The Junkshop Glam Discotheque (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6856149&style=music&fulldesc=T).

4th March 1973, The Sensation recorded the song for TopPop TV Holland ... televised 1st June 1973.

Note: [B]Terry, a lefty, is playing a right-handed Fender Telecaster bass upside down and... it looks like 2 of the boys in the band had dropsy that day!

Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) B-side, 'Rastus Ravel (Is A Mean Old Man)', was re-released, 2nd April 2013, as track 4 on 'Piccadilly Sunshine, Part Twelve – British Pop Psych and Other Flavours 1967-1971' ... on the Particles (UK) label ~ previously known as Past & Present Records.

Neither the band, John Edward (the songwriter), nor Larry Page (copyright owner) knew anything about it ... it's a bootleg!

Martin (drummer) phoned Larry in Australia and asked him about it ... the conversation may be heard here (http://the-heatwave.bandcamp.com/track/larry-page-conversation).

The purveyor of this pirated product is Steven Carr (steven@redriverimports.com), Red River Export, 36 Central Avenue, West Molesey, Surrey, KT8 2QZ
Tel. 020 897 90995

Upon enquiring of Mr. Carr about the legality of said album, Martin received the reply, 'Reliable sources indicate that you did not even play on the track in question'.

Reliable sources?

A little off kilter perhaps but obviously a man with a fertile imagination who has in the past managed to harness an idea in a profitable direction.

I'm sure having the merchandising rights to Metal Mickey sure beat working for a while. Wally Wibble may have his time in the Hawaiian sun yet....just needs working on!

Nice to read about ‘Rastus Ravel’ by Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) in Shindig! Magazine April 2013 Record Reviews of VARIOUS ARTISTS – Piccadilly Sunshine, Part 12 Particles CD by Paul Martin ~ who wrote...

So here’s another hamper of low calorie sooth-sayers with pictures to paint. The indulgence food in this particular feast comes from Heatwave’s “phat” mod-soul funker, ‘Rastus Ravel’.

Terry, "We played on both the records as the backing band for the 'Rastus' singles for nothing while (as usual) we had a bit of studio time left after a recording session. We also played on the John O'Hara B-side, 'I Am The Candidate For Love (http://www.45cat.com/record/srl1075)', which used the original and remixed backing track for, 'Oh My Eli (http://www.45cat.com/45_search.php?sq=Oh+My+Eli&sm=re)' and 'Good Old Rock And Roll (http://www.45cat.com/record/cbs7724)', a B-side for Stuart Edwards and Dave Taylor (of Greenfield Hammer who became Edison Lighthouse) then called Hogback 'N' Pig. We were always being taken for a ride. Mr. Edward (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Edward) always cut corners to make a few bob for himself.

John, "With all these compilation records and CDs, does anybody receive any royalties or are they all out of copyright now? Not that we were ever paid any money for them years ago."

Martin, "I played on the original 'Rastus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scSQvoI05Og)' but not the other two and, we weren't paid then by Penny Farthing Records or our wicked uncle Wally."

'Boogie On The Bayou', a bad-ass boot-stompin' guaranteed dance floor filler of a song with a catchy sing-along chorus, co-written by Martin Samuel (https://about.me/martin_h_samuel) (lyric) when in New Orleans, Louisiana and Lisa Nemzo (melody) then in Marina del Rey, California ... was recorded by Bad Ass Boots, a band (4 gals + 1 guy) from the San Francisco Bay Area (Oakland, CA), and released 21st July 2014 by Dream Wild Records.

Same old song and dance 43 years down the road... as it was with Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) in 1971, so it was with The New Revolution (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NX5vok-L3E) in 2014... Martin was kicked out for suggesting they play an original song by someone (anyone) in the band, in this instance – 'Boogie On The Bayou'.

Since the song's release, Max Perry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Maxperry22)... world-renowned choreographer and the Godfather of line dance as we now know it, created the line dance 'Bayou Bay Boogie (http://bayoubayboogie.doodlekit.com/)' especially for the song and Bob Peyre-Ferry (http://www.honkytonkinproductions.org/) wrote a partner dance for it.
Both dances are being enjoyed worldwide... not only in the U.S., U.K. and Europe but as far afield as Singapore and Japan.
The 2 dance classes may be viewed and the dance step sheets downloaded at : Boogie On The Bayou (http://www.boogieonthebayou.n.nu)

In addition to streaming worldwide on the Internet, the song has been aired on the radio by none other than Emperor Rosko (http://http://www.emperorrosko.net/), Steve Anthony on Radio Caroline (http://radiocaroline.co.uk/#home.html), stations in 20 different countries and included on Coast2Coast CountryStars Mixtape Vol. 1 (http://coast2coastmixtapes.com/mixtapes/mixtapedetail.aspx/countrystars-mixtape-vol-1?track=33).

1970/1971... Heatwave (http://www.heatwave.n.nu) played, 'It's Over Now' and 'Rainmaker Man' written by Martin (drummer).
Richard (lead guitarist) played bottle-neck electric slide on the latter which was recorded at the BBC and twice aired on the Jimmy Young BBC Worldwide Show.

As a result, John Edward paid the princely sum of 1/- to publish the song.
The money was invested in a Mars bar and cup of tea at the Blue Boar on the M1 on the way home from a gig.

Unfortunately, no recordings of either song seem to have survived.

2013... Martin and Terry (rhythm guitarist) were reunited in Florida, U.S.A.

2014... when Terry was back in the U.K., Martin sent him some lyrics and finally, after 45 years, they co-wrote their first song.

Terry sang and played all the instruments on, 'Sailin' Away (https://the-heatwave.bandcamp.com/track/sailin-away)'.

'Cinnamon Girl (https://the-heatwave.bandcamp.com/track/cinnamon-girl-on-the-bbc)', by Neil Young, was broadcast on the BBC in 1971 by DJ Brian Matthew and is included on the BBC Transcription Services ‎– 357 compilation Top Of The Pops - 357 (https://www.discogs.com/release/10818995).

The song was recorded at the BBC when Heatwave was a 5-piece...
John Fellows – bass & vocal
Terry Shea – rhythm guitar & vocal
Richard Steen – lead guitar & vocal
Martin H. Samuel – drums
Peter Allatt – lead vocal & percussion

Terry (rhythm guitar) does not remember ever recording at the BBC as anything but Heatwave and believes the Top Of The Pops - 357 compilation album B-side track 4, 'Cinnamon Girl (https://www.discogs.com/composition/11e866e0-c20a-4b91-a232-2a4c4a57d8f8-Cinnamon-Girl)', is erroneously stated as by The Sensations.
