As requested, some thoughts on 'new' music, though these are both 2011.
I love Laurel Halo’s stuff and I can’t stand James Ferraro’s. It’s as simple as that. Both are on the ultra-hyped Hippos In Tanks label and both were celebrated in 2011 but Ferraro just doesn’t connect with me at all.
I think it may be age-related and I’m old. Ferraro has ticked all the right boxes for being ‘now.’ He releases music prolifically. He tweets constantly. (Lil’ B? ) His music is hipped and hyped as being relevant to the technology and short attention span of today with songs called Sim and an Ipad is the dominant image on his last release called Far Side Virtual. There are a multitude of internet pixels dedicated to his career but I can’t help wondering if (like Lil’ B) he just puts out anything and everything he does and there is just no quality filter in place. His music just leaves me cold and tracks on his latest clean and properly recorded release (wow that’s some achievement) just sound like snippets from internet games or computer software advertisements.
On the other hand the music of Laurel Halo is far more considered, paced and thoughtful. I love listening to the title track of her EP Hour Logic in the car. It sounds like a classic house track so my liking for it may be as age-related as my dislike of Ferraros music. It sounds like there is some TB-303 action going on it which is another hook for me.
Time will be the test for which of these two will be around in three years time. I think for the download buyers three generations below me it will be the ever-morphing Ferraro.
